Eric Gill (1882-1940) was a wood engraver, sculptor, typographer, and draughtsman, born in Brighton. On his first job carving the Stations of the Cross in the Westminster Cathedral Gill said, “I had a proper Christian enthusiasm but I had sufficent, if only just sufficient technical ability combined with a complete and genuine ignorance of art school anatomy and traditional academic style. Of course they didn’t know this. They thought I was carving in what may be called ‘archaic manner’ (…)”
Working with voluptuous lines the artist created a body of works that merges the expression of the erotic and religious.
