Eric Gill – Engravings

Eric Gill (1882-1940) was a wood engraver, sculptor, typographer, and draughtsman, born in Brighton. On his first job carving the Stations of the Cross in the Westminster Cathedral Gill said, “I had a proper Christian enthusiasm but I had sufficent, if only just sufficient technical ability combined with a complete and genuine ignorance of art school anatomy and traditional academic style. Of course they didn’t know this. They thought I was carving in what may be called ‘archaic manner’ (…)”

Working with voluptuous lines the artist created a body of works that merges the expression of the erotic and religious.

Impressive range of papers to serve different purposes and techniques such as painting, ink, watercolour, photography, graphic works, ink-jet printers among so many others. The website gallery shows exciting pictures of the mill… definitely worth a visit and maybe chancing a workshop. The online catalogue brings the whole range of products (prices on request).

Artlab Contemporary Print

While doing my researches online I came across Tracy Hill’s text on non toxic etching methods (please go to link ‘Texts’ in this website for full version). The results of her research are based on her own experiments with a great range of material, resources and serious references in the field.

Solid and concise her text has the credibility of those who are committed to their practice. Moreover I find out that Hill co-runs Artlab Contemporary Print – a print studio based in Preston Lancashire, UK. Along with Magda – Stawarska Beavan they organize talks, exhibitions and much more. The studio offers support and well equipped facilities for relief, intaglio, screenprint, digital and lithography. You can also become a member at very fair rate.

Current exhibition: Field of Vision

When: until April 14th 2012

Griffen Mill Handmade Paper – Co Mayo – Ireland

Although they are not open to the public, as described by themselves over the phone ‘it’s in the middle of nowhere’, you can have access to some of their activities by visiting their website. Griffen Mill offers a good range of papers you can shop online. In their website you will find a nicely condensed brief on the history of papermaking – and few papermaking poems.

The Memory of the Paper

This website is about paper, paper expertise, and history of paper. It provides resources in the following main application areas: historical research on paper in Europe, expertise of documents made of paper, among others. I am really impressed by their user friendly programs, applications and downloadable softwares that cover simple to advanced searches, from watermarks to complex atlas.

I do recommend you have a look even if it’s only for curiosity.

Dawn of the Western Printing

Browsing online I came across the National Diet Library, the only national library in Japan. The material found in the link below was compiled for the occasion of the exhibition Dawn of the Western Printing based on Inkyunabura no Sekai (The World of Incunabula), written by Hiroharu Orita. The info you will find is amazing:

And for those who enjoyed it, go to the Library’s page:

I simply love the way they made their library available to EVERYONE and FOR FREE.
